Understanding the Importance of Mineral Patterns in Midlife: HTMA and Perimenopause Analysis.

If you're in your 40s or think you are in perimenopause ....rand suddenly feel like the things that used to work aren't working anymore, you're not imagining the change.

  • Maybe you're waking up at 3 a.m.

  • Your energy disappears halfway through the afternoon.

  • You're more easily overwhelmed.

  • Your workouts take longer to recover from. Your digestion has changed.

  • You're gaining weight differently.

  • Or you simply don't feel like yourself.

Welcome to midlife.

Hormones certainly matter during perimenopause, but they're not the only part of the picture.

HTMA and perimenopause are an important conversation because hormones aren't the only part of the midlife picture. This is one reason I've added Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) to the tools I use in my practice.

HTMA gives us another way to look at mineral patterns and metabolic trends that may provide insight into the nutritional foundations supporting energy, stress response, blood sugar regulation and other processes that become especially important during midlife.

What Is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is a noninvasive test that measures levels and relationships of minerals found in a small sample of hair.

But the value isn't simply finding out whether one mineral is "high" or another is "low."

We're looking for patterns.
  • How does calcium relate to magnesium?

  • What is happening with sodium and potassium?

  • What does the overall pattern suggest about your current metabolic tendencies and stress response?

  • And most importantly, how does that information connect with what you're actually experiencing?

HTMA isn't a diagnosis. It doesn't tell us that one mineral is causing your fatigue, weight gain, anxiety or poor sleep. It gives us another piece of the puzzle.

Why Minerals Matter During Perimenopause

Infographic of a human body with labeled minerals and organ icons: iron, copper, iodine, magnesium, chromium, zinc, calcium.
Explore the crucial roles of essential minerals in your body's vital functions: iron for blood health, copper for liver support, iodine for thyroid regulation, magnesium for heart function, chromium for pancreas efficiency, zinc for adrenal health, and calcium for strong bones and connective tissues.

Your body doesn't suddenly stop needing its basic building blocks because your hormones are changing.

Quite the opposite.

Minerals are involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body, including energy production, blood sugar regulation, muscle and nerve function, thyroid physiology, hydration and the body's response to stress.

And midlife can put a lot of demands on those systems.

You may be juggling a career, children, aging parents, relationships and a packed schedule while sleeping less, eating on the run and trying to squeeze in a workout.

Then perimenopause enters the picture.

Instead of looking only at hormones, I want to know: What kind of foundation are those hormones working with?

HTMA and Perimenopause: Looking Beyond Hormones

Chart titled Significant Ratios shows blue bars for metabolic rate, vitality, thyroid, hormone, adrenal, blood sugar, infection ratio.
Graph illustrating significant ratios in HTMA analysis, highlighting patterns in metabolic rate, vitality, thyroid, hormone levels, adrenal function, blood sugar, and infection ratio.

HTMA does not measure estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, FSH or LH.

That's an important distinction. Those hormones require appropriate medical or laboratory testing when we need to evaluate them directly.

What HTMA can show us is the mineral environment surrounding many of the systems that influence how you feel during midlife. For example, I may look at patterns involving:

Calcium and Magnesium

  • Calcium and magnesium work together throughout the body, including in muscle and nerve function.

  • Rather than looking at either number alone, HTMA allows us to look at their relationship and how that fits into the rest of your mineral pattern.

  • When calcium is significantly elevated, for example, I don't simply assume you have plenty of calcium or tell you to stop eating calcium-rich foods.

  • We look deeper.

Sodium and Potassium

  • Sodium and potassium are important electrolytes, but on an HTMA their relationship can also give us useful information about the bigger mineral and stress-response picture.

  • That can be especially interesting for the woman who tells me:

  • "I can handle stress. I just don't bounce back from it like I used to."

  • That sentence describes midlife for a lot of women.

Trace Minerals

  • Minerals such as zinc, copper, selenium, manganese and chromium may not get as much attention as calcium and magnesium, but they're still part of the bigger picture.

  • Rather than chasing each individual mineral with another supplement, we look at which patterns deserve priority.

  • Because more supplements aren't always the answer.

Why Your Symptoms Still Matter

This may be the most important part.

I don't treat an HTMA report. I work with the person sitting in front of me.

Two women can have similar mineral patterns and feel completely different.

That's why your HTMA is considered alongside your health history, symptoms, food intake, sleep, stress, digestion, hydration, movement and other lifestyle factors.

  • Maybe your biggest concern is waking up every night.

  • Maybe it's the afternoon crash.

  • Maybe you're gaining weight even though you haven't dramatically changed how you eat.

  • Maybe your bowels have slowed down.

  • Maybe you're more irritable, anxious or overwhelmed than you used to be.

The HTMA gives us additional information that can help us decide where to start.

Midlife Doesn't Need Another Perfect Plan

Most women I work with don't need another complicated health routine. They need to know what matters most for them.

  • That might mean eating enough protein.

  • Improving hydration and mineral intake.

  • Supporting digestion.

  • Getting outside and moving regularly.

  • Prioritizing sleep.

  • Reducing the constant stress load.

  • Or using targeted nutritional support based on the patterns we're seeing.

We don't try to change everything at once.

What About HRT?

HTMA isn't a replacement for hormone testing, medical evaluation or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

And it isn't an either-or decision.

You can work on your nutritional and mineral foundations while also having a conversation with your physician or menopause-trained provider about whether HRT is appropriate for you.

Medical providers can evaluate symptoms, order diagnostic testing, perform recommended screenings and discuss prescription options.

My role is different.

I help you look at the foundational pieces including nutrition, minerals, blood sugar, digestion, hydration, sleep, movement and stress, and use tools such as HTMA to help make that process more individualized.

Those approaches can work alongside each other.

Stop Guessing About What Your Body Needs

One of the hardest parts about midlife is that there is no shortage of advice.

  • Take magnesium.

  • Don't take magnesium.

  • Eat less.

  • Eat more protein.

  • Fast longer.

  • Don't fast.

  • Take hormones.

  • Balance your hormones naturally.

It's exhausting. I don't believe you need to try everything.
